MOJIRU [TYPŒ]

x-height、字面を素直に見れば小文字xの高さのことだと判ると思う。大抵の説明では意味を広げて一般に小文字の高さ（小文字のうち、ascenderとdescenderがある文字はそれを除いた部分で、overshoot部分は微小なので取合えず無視）をいう。

しかし、用語集によっては一寸混乱させられた。
参照元の一つ、Typography Terms - Proxima softwareを例にすると、

mean line

The line on which the top parts of most of the lowercase letters set (not the ascenders). Also called x-height. The top (imaginary) point of all lowercase characters without ascenders.

x-height

The height of those lowercase letters such as "x", which do not have ascenders or descenders. The lowercase 'x' is used for measurement since it usually sits squarely on the baseline.

上記の通り、mean lineの語義説明では「mean line=x-height」で「x-heightは（仮想）線」と読み取れてしまうが、しかしx-heightの語義説明では「x-heightは高さ」と明記されているので、このような説明だと英語読解の拙いワタクシなど混乱の極み。

なんだかなぁと思いつつ、結局小文字の高さを指す語ということで落ち着くだろうと思って調べてみたら…。

語義　definitions

1. baselineからascenderとdescenderを除いた小文字の最上部までの高さ。baselineからmean line 1までの高さ。
2. 小文字のうち、ascenderを除いた最上部を通る仮想の水平線。x-height 1の最上部を通る仮想の水平線。【同】mean line 1

上記語義2の通り、「x-heightは（仮想）線」と説明した文献を2つ発見。OMG

1つはあのTDCの用語集。

An imaginary line at the top of the lowercase x that sets a height guideline for flat letters and letterparts. Curved letters usually pass through a bit in order to appear the same height as the x.

もう1つは

An imaginary line that establishes a common height from the baseline for the lower-case letters without the ascenders or descenders and is derived from the height of the lower-case x.

このように、所謂「Type Anatomy」、「Type Terminology」、「Glossary of Type」などと呼ばれるものを調べ始めたきっかけは、不明な用語をちょっと調べたら、まさにこのx-heightのように混乱させられることがあって、掘り下げていったら嵌り込んでしまったというワケ。

今回でこのブログ上で用語解説するのはひとまず終了。もっと詳細を知りたいという奇特な方は、拙WIKI「辞時源諸説」のtype anatomyをご覧あれ。

先日発刊の『書体の研究vol.11』やそのUstreamでも少しだけ取り上げられてもいましたmean line (meanline)とwaistlineについて。

mean line (meanline)

1.小文字のうち、ascenderを除いた最上部を通る仮想の水平線。x-heightの最上部を通る仮想の水平線。

A horizontal guideline indicating where the tops of lowercase letters without ascenders appear to align. Often referred to in an imaginary sense. Sometimes referred to as x-line or x-height line.

2.baselineとcapital lineの中間を示す仮想の水平線。

字面の意味的には上記2の方が妥当なような気がするが、使用例からいうと圧倒的に1の方。但し、Wikipedia英語版では2の定義が本来的であるという言い回しをしている。

waistline

mean line 1に同じ。

Upper boundary of the body height in writing or type.

つまり、mean line (meanline)は、waistlineに同じ。




実は、参考文献からもわかるように、waistlineは主にカリグラフィー用語で、タイポ関係で用いられている例は多くない。日本では『書体の研究vol.11』と『文字の組み方』で使用例がある。といっても、上記のwaistlineで参照した定義では、タイポ関係でも用いられることが明記されているので、余りこだわる必要もない。




mean line (meanline) 1・waistlineの同義語として他に、headline、median、midline、x-line、x-height line、x-height（！）があるのだけれど、ややこしいことに、mean line (meanline) 1・waistlineとx-heightを混同した使用例が見受けられる。こちらの方が悩ましい。。。

これは、現状カリグラフィー関連でしか見聞しない語。

欧文書体名の読み方の第3回目は、Universを取り上げる。


日本語ではユニヴァース、ユニバースで固定している。

今更ながら感いっぱいだけども、どうも発音の原理主義的な動き、つまりは原語読みを推奨し出来る限り統一しようという動きもあるらしい（ワタクシは各国・各言語で慣習的になったものは下手に直さない方が良い派で、新たなものは原語読みを推奨したい派）。

そのような動きは、

• oo’-nih-VAIR /uːniv'eər/（片仮名表記：ウーニヴェア）

となっていて、Universという語が元来「宇宙、普遍」（=【英】universe）を意味するフランス語ゆえに、最後のsを発音しないなどフランス語の発音（正確には違うが）を踏襲しようとしているようである。


因みに、フランス語の他、調べた限りの他言語の発音もあげておく。

1. フランス語で/ynivɛʁ/（片仮名表記：ユニヴェル）
2. デンマーク語で/univɛrs, uniˈvæɐ̯s/（片仮名表記：ウニヴァス）
3. ルーマニア語で/'univəs/（片仮名表記：ウニヴァス）

最後のsを発音する言語もある。


というわけで、英語での発音が明確でないままであるが、どうも「universe」と同じくYou-nee-vers /j'uːnəvəːrs/（片仮名表記：ユニヴァース、ユニバース）と発音をするらしい。中にはYou-nee-verz /j'uːnəvəːrz/と最後のsを濁らす人もいるようだ。

何故か、周期的に話題になる【欧文書体名の読み方】、ソロソロ本格的に気になり出したので、他にやること沢山あるのにまた連載的に始めてしまおうと思う。他のエントリの如く気まぐれ更新なので悪しからず。


読み方を調べる方法は、通常googleなどで「書体名 読み方」と検索すると思う。そうすると読み方を調べているサイトは少なくない。が、欧米の人は実際どう発音しているのかが気になってくる。で、検索語を「書体名 pronouciation」とすると、向こうの人も読み方を気にしているようでしっかりと音声付き・発音記号付きのサイトがヒットする。というわけで、こんな感じで調べたことをまとめていこうと思う。


では栄えある第1回目は、中でも多くの読み方を持つArialを取り上げる。

1. 英語ネイティブで/'eiriəl/（片仮名表記：エイリアル、エィリアル）
   Pronunciation of arial - how to pronounce arial correctly. | howjsay.com
   開くといきなり発音音声が聞えて吃驚するので一寸注意。
2. 英語ネイティブで/'eəriəl/（片仮名表記：エアリアル、エリアル）
   arial pronunciation: How to pronounce arial in English | forvo
   aerial（空気の）やariel（アラビアガゼル）にスペルが似ている（発音は両者共に/'eəriəl/）。
   inogolo - Pronunciation of Ariel : How to pronounce Ariel
   発音は/AIR-yuhl/と表記され、別表を参照して発音記号に直すと/e'əriəl/となる。
3. 英語ネイティブで/eraiəl/（片仮名表記：エライアル）
   Arial - Meaning of the boy name Arial at Baby Names Pedia
   発音は/EHRAYahL/と表記され、註で「approx English pronunciation for Arial: EH as in "ebb (EH.B)" ; R as in "race (R.EY.S)" ; AY as in "side (S.AY.D)" ; AH as in "mud (M.AH.D)" ; L as in "lay (L.EY)"」と解説されているので発音記号に直すと/eraiəl/（片仮名表記：エライアル）となる。
4. /ɑriːəl/（片仮名表記：アリアル）
   Arial - Meaning of the boy name Arial at Baby Names Pedia
   発音は/aaRRIY-aeL/と表記され、註で「English pronunciation for Arial: AA as in "odd (AA.D)" ; R as in "race (R.EY.S)" ; IY as in "eat (IY.T)" ; AE as in "at (AE.T)" ; L as in "lay (L.EY)"」と解説されているので発音記号に直すと/ɑriːəl/（片仮名表記：アリアル）となる。これは基本的に非英語圏の読み方。

英語では上記3つが主に使われているようだが、他にもあるようで、これという発音は定まっていないようだ。また、英語以外の言語についても調べてみたが、今のところこれといったサイトは見つけられなかった。

2012.8.14追記：
書体名Arialは上記1のエイリアル、エィリアルが正解とのこと。2、4も許容範囲内（4は非英語圏の読み）。
